What Causes Climate Change ?

Over the past 100 years or so, scientists have recorded changes occurring on the earth, and even in the atmospheric temperature. The changes are natural, but what is alarming here is that some changes are happening too fast, while some changes are caused directly as a result of carelessness of man.

In fact, the temperature has increased by 1.1 degrees Fahrenheit, or 0.6 degrees Celsius, over the past 130 years or so. This may seem to be small, but it is actually an alarming increase which has caused the polar icecaps and mountain glaciers to melt. This, in turn, has raised the sea level by 15 centimeters. 

The causes can be categorized into manmade and natural. 

Natural causes of climate change include the following:  

• The gases and ash thrown out can affect the climate for years. 
• The oceans absorb the heat from the radiation of the sun and transport it around with the help of its currents.

Manmade causes of climate change are as follows:

• The release of carbon dioxide and harmful greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. This is caused by the burning of fossil fuel like coal, oil and other petroleum products. 
• Deforestation, where the trees and forested land have been cleared to make way for farms and place for an increasing world population, has led to increased levels of carbon dioxide.   
• Vehicle emissions which also release harmful gases. 
• Emission of methane gas from domestic animals. This gas is also emitted during coal mining and oil drilling.
• Electricity and electronics like computers and refrigerators which also release carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

          All these in some way have contributed to negatively impacting our atmosphere, and as a result it is we who will ultimately suffer.
