Industrialization has made wonderful changes in our lives, but it has also brought with it several negative changes as well. The smoke and gases released by the burning of oil and coal in factories and homes, and vehicle emission are slowly increasing our global temperature. Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases are warming up the global temperature. |
Scientists have calculated that the surface temperature of the earth has increased by 0.6 degrees Celsius, or 1.1 degrees Fahrenheit. This has drastically affected the earth by melting the ice at the poles. The sea level is, thus, slowly rising. It has risen about 15 centimeters in the 20th century alone. This will be a threat to coastal areas and coral reefs
The summer thickness of the artic sea ice has reduced to half. The surface temperature of the sea is also rising. The water is also becoming more acidic as the carbon dioxide released by human activities gets dissolved in the water. Even mountain glaciers are slowly disappearing.
There has also been extreme weather. Global warming has led to heavier rainfalls which cause flooding. On the other hand, some parts of the world are going through severe drought due to increase in evaporation rate and changes in the wind patterns that bring the rain clouds. The incidences of hurricanes are also increasing. In fact, we are witnessing hurricanes with more ferocity. Intense heat waves strong enough to kill people have been reported from several areas across the world.
The ecosystem is changing with animals moving from the increasingly warmer or colder places to places that have temperatures they are used to.
All of the above effects of climate change sound alarming, and the fact that they are all man made makes the entire thing even scarier.
