France is among the few developed countries which have been quite vocal on the need to address the issue of climate change. This is because policymakers in that country understand and realize that in case of global climatic disaster, France cannot remain untouched or unaffected. The country has already taken various symbolic yet effective measures to check the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. |
Unlike other developed countries like the United States, nuclear fuel is the biggest source of energy in France. It has numerous nuclear power plants which generate and serve a significant proportion of electricity needs of the country. Quite recently, it witnessed a nationwide “lights out” campaign in which people voluntarily switched off lights so as to save energy.
People as well as the government in France realize that if the world fails to come together on the issue of climate change, its consequences would be disastrous for the entire planet. It is likely to result in erratic seasonal cycles, flooding, droughts and storms. France understands that such natural disasters are going to hurt its economic growth as it too is a part of the broader global economic order.
However, tackling climate change is easier said than done as it requires will power and effort, both on the part of governments and their people. Policymakers should encourage those activities which help in checking climate change. Other than that, French government should also extend the knowledge and know-how on green technologies to developing countries. Addressing the issue of climate change requires both commitment and vision and depends a lot on actions and policies of developed countries like France.
