The planet, which is home to billions of living organizations, is a mix of numerous complex phenomena. Since its creation, the planet has been responsible for the birth as well as extinction of millions of species. Human beings, who are relatively new to this planet, are one of the most intelligent creatures ever to walk on its surface. In a span of few million years, human beings have transformed both their lives and the planet due to their superior thinking abilities and technology. |
However, in their quest to achieve success, they have also ended up disturbing the delicate cycle of climate on which every human civilization in this world is based. In recent years, the planet has witnessed a multifold increase in the quantity of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere. This now threatens to disturb the planet’s delicate lifecycle.
Since decades, environmentalists and climatologists have been warning governments against the harmful effects of unchecked release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. These greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, which are released due to burning of fossil fuels, increase the atmosphere’s heat absorption capacity. Some scientists claim that over a period of time, this is likely to result in increase in global temperatures. And this is what is known as global warming. Already the polar icecaps are melting and reducing in size because of infinitesimal rise in temperatures. If this continues, sea levels will increase, and low lying areas will get inundated forever. Already land is in shortage for the massive world population. Inundation will cause further shortage of land.
A host of climatic events in recent times have been attributed to global climate change. If this goes unchecked for long, environmentalists warn that it may lead to a point of no return for the earth and its people as erratic climatic conditions would affect harvests, thus resulting in worldwide shortage of food.
