Blackberry is the name of a brand of wireless handheld communication devices, which were first introduced in 1999 by Research in Motion (RIM), a Canadian company headquartered in Waterloo, Ontario. The device allows many functions that one would otherwise use a computer and Internet connection to do. |
You can use a Blackberry to push or send emails, make and receive phone calls, send text messages, fax using the wireless Internet connect, and browse the web besides hosts of many other services. Though the original Blackberry was monochrome, the current models have color displays.
Blackberry is the world's second most popular smart phone platform, and has a world market share of 21 percent. In May 2009, the company announced that the number of subscribers stood at approximately 28.5 million.
The Blackberry has a multitasking operating system, and this system is supported ably by either a scroll wheel or a trackball, depending on whether you have the old model or the latest one. The operating system supports Java and WAP. The device first gained headway into the market with its email feature. The current OS 4 model allows the use to activate and synchronize the device with Microsoft Exchange's e-mail, calendar, tasks, notes and contacts. In addition, the device also supports Novell GroupWise and Lotus Notes. It has the latest Intel processor that makes the Blackberry a highly sophisticated wireless communication device.
The Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) is a software package used to integrate the handhelds into an organization’s email system. Each Blackberry is identified by the BES through an individual and unique Blackberry PIN.
The alternate services offered are the Blackberry Internet Service and the Blackberry Desktop Redirector. The Blackberry messenger enables the user to send and receive text messages through the Blackberry PIN. The Blackberry Alliance program is a program for partner companies that work as contractors for RIM to come up with new applications, which can further enhance the functioning and working of Blackberry communication devices.
