How Does Technology Affect Society ?

Technology has a tremendous influence on society in that it affects every aspect of people's social existence; from the way we communicate with each other to the way we carry out monetary transactions to the ferocity with which we wage wars. It has surely reduced the world to a global village, greatly reducing distances between people and nations.

The advancements we have made with respect to time, precision and space cannot be overemphasized. We have genetically engineered food products, vaccines and treatments to counter the most modern illnesses and electronic devices that automate our daily chores from washing dishes to getting a good body massage. We have high level specialization of activities, greater social networking, information overflow, cheaper prices and the evolution of a new metro-sexual society that is fast-paced, and questions conventional ways of thinking.

However, technology has its own drawbacks. The environmental threats posed by technological interventions demand serious attention. There is the problem of global warming, non-biodegradable and radioactive wastes. The arsenals of the world are heaped with destructive weapons that can blow up the world in no time. The privileged class is becoming richer, while the poor are becoming poorer. This is widening the gap between the upper and lower classes of the society. There is the erosion of moral values which is visible through rise in crime rate, increasing consumerism, and invasion of privacy in the form of cybercrime.

Thus, we see that technology acts as a double-ended sword in the society with immense potential to make or mar.
