Children under the age of five are more susceptible to swine flu as their immune system is not fully developed and therefore, weak. • Breathing problems: The child has trouble in breathing or may be breathing rapidly.
• Bluish or gray skin colour: The blue skin color which may appear like a rash indicates a lack of oxygen and requires immediate medical attention.
• Lack of fluid intake: The child refuses to drink up fluids. Dehydration can worsen the situation.
• Severe vomiting: Severe vomiting coupled with explosive diarrhea can drain the child.
• Body ache: The child does not want to be held and is irritable.
• Flat affect: There is minimal eye contact and does not interact normally.
• Not waking up: If your child does not wake up, rush him or her immediately to the doctor.
• Worsening cough and returning fever: Regular flu-like symptoms improve, but return with severe cough and high fever.

          As precautionary measures, their hands should be washed regularly with an alcohol-based cleanser. Try to avoid touching the face and mouth with the hands as they may contain germs. The child should be given plenty of fluids in the form of water, juice and soup. Chicken soup is especially good for clearing up congestion. It is also important to ensure that the child gets ample rest and sleep.
