Association was formed in England to regulate the game and unite all the local plying teams. Today it ranks as the number one sport in more than 175 countries across the world. Many reasons have been attributed to the popularity of the sport. One reason is its simplicity. If a ball is rolled even towards a young toddler who has just learnt to take his first steps, his first instinct will be to kick the ball. As he grows older, he learns that kicking a ball towards a target is more rewarding than just kicking the ball. And when he sees other kids in the neighborhood doing the same, he is naturally drawn towards them and subsequently to the sport of football.

Another reason for soccer’s popularity is its accessibility. Soccer initially started off as a sport that was only played by the aristocratic classes of England in their clubs and boarding schools. But the inexpensive nature of the sport quickly made it popular among the masses. Many of the world’s greatest soccer players have come from poverty stricken or socially underprivileged section of society.

Religion, or the gradual weakening of its hold over people, is another reason for the popularity of the sport. In the past people congregated in churches, temples, mosques or synagogues to practice their religion. But in modern times fewer people follow religion as strictly as in the past. In its place sport has been the pretext that people use to congregate. Be it in the local pub, the local ground, or a bigger international event, the various options available to people to congregate and follow the sport collectively has made it popular.
