Modern soccer world cups originated with the first world cup in 1930. This tournament had been organized after the formation of the FIFA in 1904.

The first world cup was played between 13 teams in 1930, and won by Uruguay. The second world cup was played by 16 teams in 1934, and won by Italy. The third world cup was played between 15 tams in 1938, and won again by Italy. The fourth world cup was played between 13 teams in 1950, and won by Uruguay.

The fifth world cup was played between 15 teams in 1954, and won by West Germany. The sixth world cup was played between 16 teams in 1958, and won by Brazil. The seventh world cup was played between 16 teams in 1962, and won by Brazil again. The eighth world cup was played between 16 teams in 1966, and won by England.
The ninth world cup was played between 16 teams in 1970, and won by Brazil. The tenth world cup was played between 16 teams in 1974, and won by West Germany. The eleventh world cup was played between 16 teams in 1978, and won by Argentina. The twelfth world cup was played between 16 teams in 1982, and won by Italy.

The thirteenth world cup was played between 16 teams in 1986, and won by Argentina. The fourteenth cup was played between 16 teams in 1990, and won by West Germany. The fifteenth cup was played between 16 teams in 1994, and won by Brazil. The sixteenth cup was played between 16 teams in 1998, and won by France. The seventeenth cup was played between 16 teams in 2002, and won by Brazil. The eighteenth cup was played between 16 teams in 2006, and won by Italy.
