Medical science has come a very long way in its understanding of cancer from the days when it was thought to be caused by a worm. |
But even today there is a great deal that scientists and researchers do not know about cancer. With such a disease, the layman knows even less. In addition, the taboo associated with the disease and the high incidence of deaths among people diagnosed with the disease, has meant that most people tend to be in fearful awe of the disease. In such a scenario, when a friend, family member, loved one or colleague is undergoing cancer treatment, it can be hard knowing what to do or what to say. Staying in touch is vital, as cancer patients often suffer feelings of loneliness and isolation, but visits aren't always practical.
Greeting cards can be a lifeline to avoid sufferers from feelings of isolation and loneliness, and to enable the well-wishers to keep in touch. But it is very difficult knowing the right words to put on a greeting card for a cancer patient. Ignorance about what stage the disease is in, and faced with the possibility that the sufferer may succumb to the disease, can make choosing the right card or picking the right words to write an excruciating experience.
Humour always works; it is very difficult to go wrong with humour. Cards that make fun of the intense treatment process of chemotherapy and radiation are sure to evoke a smile. The situation is worsened by the fact that while cancer patients receive emotional and psychological counseling to help them cope with the disease, friends and family members may not benefit from the same experience. So while the patient has been prepared by the counseling to accept the disease into their lives, their loved goes go through the trauma of shock, sorrow and many other emotions. This is reflected in their behavior towards the patient. In such a case, the best approach to take is to treat the patient exactly the same you would have before his or her diagnosis. Don’t go to extra effort just because the diagnosis is cancer. Make a get-well-soon card as if the patient were suffering from the flu or common cold.
A card is a great way to communicate your love and support for a loved one. Keep it simple. Even if they suffer from cancer.
