Cancer can affect any part of the human body and are usually named after the organ affected; common cancers are lung cancer, breast cancer, skin cancer, testicular cancer etc.The testicles are located behind the penis and are encased in a sac called the scrotum. Testicular cancer is when malignant cancer cells are found in one or both of the testicles.

The causes of testicular cancer are generally unknown. Medical scientists believe that one factor that could increase the risk of testicular cancer is an undescended testicle. If one testicle does not descend into the scrotum before birth, surgery may be needed to help it along. The male, who has a history of an undescended testicle, even if it was corrected with surgery, has a higher risk of this type of cancer. Another risk factor for testicular cancer is any type of congenital abnormalities or an inguinal hernia. Men that have a birth defect in the kidneys are at higher risk for testicular cancer. Of course, a past history of testicular cancer or a family history of this type of cancer puts a man at an increased risk.

A common physical manifestation of testicular cancer is a painless lump or swelling in one of the testicles. A difference in the size of the testicles or any changes in the way they feel should alert the individual to the possibility of cancer. Unexplained pain or discomfort in the testicle or scrotum is another sign of testicular cancer. Other signs of cancer in the testes include a sudden collection of fluid in the scrotum or a dull ache in the groin, back or lower part of the abdomen.

Testicular cancer is curable in 95% of the cases. Hence, it is imperative for all men to perform a periodic self-examination of their testicles to detect any anomalies. The earlier it is detected, the better it can be cured. Survival of patients with this cancer has dramatically increased in recent years.
