Cancer is a term used for diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control and are able to invade and destroy other tissues. |
Cancer is a cumulative term that encompasses more than 100 forms of the disease. Cancer can affect different parts of the human body. A number of known and tested treatment procedures exist for different types of cancer. But the treatment for cancer is seemingly never-ending. Doctors and scientists continue to study the different forms of cancer to gain better understanding of the causes in order to establish more efficient treatment procedures for the treatment, cure, or even subsequent elimination of the disease.
Clinical trials refer to the testing for new treatment options. They are scientific or medical research studies designed to find better ways to treat or prevent diseases. Newly developed drugs and medical procedures are tested for safety and effectiveness before they can be recommended for general use. A clinical trial is usually one of the final stages of a long and careful research process.
There exist different types of clinical trials for cancer.
Treatment trials test newly created treatments like drugs and medication, new approaches to surgery or radiation, or combination treatments to treat cancer.
Prevention trials test new approaches, such as medicines, vitamins, minerals, or other supplements that doctors believe may lower the risk of a certain type of cancer. These trials look for the best way to prevent cancer in people who have never had cancer or to prevent cancer from coming back or a new cancer occurring in people who have already had cancer. Screening trials try to find the best way of spotting a cancer in as early a stage as possible so as to be able to cause minimum damage to the body. Quality of Life trials explore ways to improve the comfort and quality of life of cancer sufferers.
There are many benefits to participating in clinical trials. Participants have access to promising new treatment options that often may not be available for a long time in the outside world. The treatment approach may even be more effective than a standard approach. Participants may be the first to benefit from the new method under study.
But clinical trials do not come without risks. New methods may have adverse side effects that have not yet been observed. Also the new methods may not always be better than established methods.
