Haiti usually enjoys a tropical climate (varying depending on the altitude of regions) with intermittent rain through the year. |
There is high coastal humidity and hill resorts enjoy much cooler weather. The best time to visit Haiti is between November and March when the day climate is just perfect. May to July is the rainy season. However, even during the rainy season, the rains last just for an hour or two each evening. Since the country is quite mountainous, the quantity of rainfall that the country on the whole experiences varies based upon each region’s relief and aspect. July to October is the season for hurricanes. Any visitor to Haiti should keep in mind that the weather is about 5 degrees centigrade colder in the hill side than in the rest of the country. Therefore, warm clothing is a must when visiting.
The average temperatures along the coastline are approximately 26 degrees centigrade. As far as the amount of rainfall is concerned, Haiti gets around 508 mm in the North West of the country, but 1,346 mm in regions such as Port-au-Prince. In general, with regard to wetness, the North coast is wetter than the South. During the afternoon, the moist North East trade winds are pulled towards the interior of the country across the mountains, and this causes the humidity to be a bit less along the Caribbean coast of the country. There are periodic draughts and floods that affect the country, which are aggravated due to deforestation and improper planning of natural resources.
