Haiti’s present Prime Minister is Jean-Max Bellerive who was appointed to office on November 11, 2009 after ousting former Prime Minister Michèle Pierre-Louis. |
He was appointed to office on a resolution of the senate after the earlier Prime Minister was charged of poor performance in handling the country’s economic recovery efforts. He is Haiti’s sixth Prime Minister since the year 2004. Bellerive was born in Port-au-Prince in 1958 and went on to study in France, Belgium and Switzerland when he was quite young. He returned to his home country, Haiti, in 1986 after getting a degree in Political Science and International Relations. He is married and has two beautiful daughters. He is fluent in four languages – English, Spanish, Creole and French. Before his appointment to office as Prime Minister of Haiti, Bellerive served as the Planning and External Cooperation minister and served under at least six Prime Ministers in different capacities.
While he had never earlier been a candidate for higher office, he is known to be indispensable to the people he served, and is therefore counted upon to steer the country through the troubled waters that are ahead of him. While Bellerive’s predecessor shared strong ties with the International community, he is one of the biggest critics of International investors who have made grandiose promises but who have not kept to their word in relation to Haiti. Bellerive is respected by the International community, however, and it is hoped that he will bring a certain amount of stability to Haiti, which is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.
