Haiti is located in a seismically active zone and has witnessed destructive tremors in the past, in 1751, 1770, 1842 and 1946. |
Another catastrophic earthquake hit Haiti in January 12, 2010. The earthquake, which had a magnitude of 7.0, occurred around 16:53 local time and destroyed several buildings and claimed the lives of many. The epicenter of this earthquake was centered around 15 kilometers south west of the capital city of Port-au-Prince. The quake occurred at a depth of around 10 kilometers and almost 33 aftershocks were recorded following the disaster. Scientists explain that the reason for the quake could be the stress on the Enriquillo-Plaintain Garden fault which is one of the two faults in the region of Haiti. This fault had been locked for hundreds of years, causing it to gather stress. The only way to relieve this stress would be a large earthquake or a series of small ones. Millions of people in Haiti were affected by the 2010 quake.
The government and the International Red Cross estimate that around 100,000 to 200,000 people have lost their lives. The infrastructure of Haiti suffered severe damage and loss as a result of the quake. Experts speculate that much of the disaster could be caused by the slack building regulations in Haiti. Hospitals, churches, residences, roads, telephone lines, electricity services, transport facilities etc were destroyed. The seaport at Prince-au-Port, the National Palace, the building of the fiancé ministry, offices of the World Bank, Citibank and several textile factories also suffered serious damage. The earthquake has left the people of Haiti as refugees.
Today, many of them reside in camps or sleep on sidewalks or in their cars. Several people have been evacuated to the U.S and nearby countries. Many bodies were recovered after days and buried in mass graves. Rescue efforts are still being carried out and aid is flowing in from all parts of the world.
