A new study conducted in the Bronx, New York suggests that dementia may be kept at bay by exercise which is another reason to get off the road and onto a bicycle. The new study included many Bronx seniors who were active regularly and those who were not. In world daily news, this piece of research is being highlighted quite a bit.

The study was conducted under Dr. Charles B. Hall of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and it was found that for everyday a person was engaged in exercise or mentally stimulating activities helped ward off the sign of dementia by approximately two months. At a rate of one day per week in exchange for two more healthy months there is plenty of reason for seniors to get out there and continue to engage in life.

Previous studies by Hall showed that those who completed more years of education were also less likely to have early onset of dementia versus those who completed fewer years of higher education. However, he noted that the level of education was not the main reason, but instead the cognitive activity that occurred while in education.

The study participants have been monitored since the 1980s and were each asked how often they participated in mentally stimulating activities. Each patient was awarded a one for each activity they completed daily and tested on a regular basis every year or more for signs of dementia. The higher that a person scored on the initial screening the later signs of dementia appeared in the study participant.
