Most of the time spiders are thought of as pretty unforgiving with their steady diet of bugs and insects as well as their reputation for eating the males after mating. However, a new spider from Central America may break the stereotype as it is the first vegetarian spider ever to be discovered. |
So, here are some more details about this interesting news that is making rounds.
The spider, known as the Bagheera kiplingi formally, is named after the good hearted character Bagheera from the Jungle Book and lives in acacia trees. Further research on the species found that the unique spider is almost completely a herbivore eating only a few ant larvae from time to time.
The main component of the spider’s diet is Beltian bodies, which are found on acacias and are typically only consumed by ants.
It is believed that there is no other variety or species of spiders that eat vegetarian diets unless you count a few that may eat nectar on occasions, but not as part of their main diet.
Of course, the unique qualities of the Bagheera kiplingi do not stop here as the spider is also one of the only species in which the male takes on a role of fatherhood. In fact, many animals in the wild do not share the parenting outside of reproduction efforts. However, in this case, the spider males help look over the eggs and tiny spider babies as they grow. They also remain with the young spiders after hatching until they are fully grown and considered to be old enough to move out into the big wild on their own.
